Find the best route and airline to choose for YOUR international flights to Africa:
Check with a Registered Travel Agent
Depending on which country you are travelling to, and your originating city, you may be fortunate enough to complete your entire journey on the same airline.
If this isn't possible, then your travel agent should also be able to advise you of any code-sharing arrangements your airline of preference has, with other airlines flying directly to your chosen destination/s in Africa. This is a great option to use if you are interested in collecting airline miles or travel points, like Airmiles, etc.!
We also recommend you discuss your own travel plans with qualified and experienced travel agents, before making a final decision and booking your flights to Africa.
Registered travel agents should be able to give you up-to-date information on the best flights for international flights to Africa, and also any special airfares available at the time of booking too.
You should also verify any special travel requirements for the countries you plan to visit in Africa.
Our Preferred Routes for International Flights to Africa
We're not travel agents, so these are just our personal observations and experiences from the numerous flights we've taken.
Personally, from Canada/North America we prefer to travel via London, England, using either British Airways (BA) or South African Airways (SAA). As South African Airways doesn't fly out of Western Canada right now, our transatlantic flights and have mainly been via Air Canada.
Quite frankly, we've experienced a huge difference in the service between North American airlines (like Air Canada, Delta and Contintental Airlines) and South African Airways. When you have to spend 9 to 12 consecutive hours on a plane, especially with a young family, it's the service that really makes all the difference on your flights ... but this is not the place to discuss them!
Good Service from South Africa Airways
We've always had good service on S.A.A., on our South African domestic flights as well, when we were still living in South Africa, and also on our more recent vacations.
Austrian Airlines
Austrian Airlines also provided excellent service on our flights from Johannesburg to Washington D.C. (We had an in-transit stop in Vienna, Austria.)
What about Stopovers?
If you cannot include a stopover between your connecting flights (maybe because you want to maximize your vacation time in Africa, like we did!), we personally recommend travelling via the UK or Europe. Although travelling via Asia is another option, the return journey can be extremely arduous - speaking from personal experience again!
Of course, it would be preferable to include a stopover between your flights instead, to help relieve the jetlag, whichever way you decide to go. So make sure you discuss these details with your travel agent to find out the best options for you.
Ask for Personal Recommendations too
Ask your friends and relatives for their recommendations too - they may be able to recommend a specific airline, route, or travel agent to use to book your flights.
Although we've found some wonderful travel agents just by walking in an agency's offices, it's always great to work with a travel agent who has been highly recommended by a friend or relative.
At least you'll already have a "comfort level" when you start working with the travel agent in planning your Dream Vacation to Africa!
Reminder
A quick reminder too: whether you book your flight online or through a travel agent in your neighbourhood, please make sure you have all the correct documentation required for your trip, and that all your flight details are correct, well before your flight departure dates.
Checking out different options for international flights to Africa is a wonderful way to start planning your exciting African vacations adventure...
