Mountain Gorillas
Gorilla Habitats
Mountain gorillas (Scientific Classification: Gorilla gorilla berengei) live in the forests of the Virunga Volcanoes region, along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire).
Conservation Status
Mountain Gorillas are on the list of critically endangered animal species, as there are only about 600 mountain gorillas left in the world.
About 300 of those gorillas live in Uganda's Bwindi National Park (also known as the Impenetrable Forest), which provides one of the last remaining sanctuaries for these usually gentle giants. (In comparison, there are about 20,000 western lowland and eastern lowland gorillas remaining -- the other two gorilla sub-species.)
